The title is actually deceiving. The Original Six does not actually refer to the first six teams that were created during the NHL period. Actually, the Original Six teams refer to the time period, a quarter of a century to be exact, when the NHL just had these six teams competing in it. The teams were the Toronto Maple Leafs, Montreal Canadiens, Detroit Red Wings, New York Rangers, Chicago Blackhawks, and the Boston Bruins. The era dubbed as the “Original Six Era” actually started in 1942 when the Brooklyn Americans folded, leaving the NHL with just six teams. The “Original Six Era” lasted until 1967 when the NHL expanded, adding six new teams.
